Coordination of benefits

If your spouse has coverage through their employer, a coordination of benefits occurs. When submitting claims for children, make sure it goes to the insurance of the parent whose birthday comes first in the year. Afterwards, any part of the unpaid claim can be submitted to the other parent’s insurance plan.

How does this work?

If one parent’s DOB is June 16, 1987, and the other parent’s DOB is March 30, 1990, the claim needs to be submitted through the second parent’s insurance first. This is because March is earlier in the year than June.
